From the gun a rider broke away and... impressively stayed away... I didn't really expect anything to stick so soon, he must be pretty damn strong because he maintained a 30 second advantage for the duration of the race to claim a solo victory.
In the main bunch efforts to reel him back in were unsuccessful, there wasn't much co-operation between riders to get a proper through-and-off going on to bring him back in as a lot of riders must have considered themselves sprinters so just sat on. Many attacks went off the front, but they were all quickly brought back in. I gave it a go myself with a few attacks nearing the latter stages of the race, yet to no avail. There were a couple of strong guys who could handle a bike well through the bends, but they weren't showing any interest in working together to break away to reach the lone rider up the road.
During the last few laps the rain came and bends were being taken with a bit more caution, fortunately no one was taking any un-due risks. Ending in a bunch sprint, I lost my position at the front of the peloton that I was holding for the entirety of the race and was boxed in... Although I rode pretty aggressively during the race come the finish an even more aggressive riding approach is required next time to maintain position and contest the sprint.
Bring on next week's racing!
