I've heard a lot about this circuit as being extremely technical, it didn't disappoint on that front, you've really got to know the course to conserve energy to stay in the game.
The first 10 or so laps I was keeping up fine with the bunch, gradually learning how to tackle the very fast technical bends. After that, the efforts required coming out of the bend at the back of the course, lap by lap became increasingly harder, to the point came where the elastic band that held me to the peloton snapped, and my legs and back went "nope this isn't happening".
After that I took a couple more laps to cool down and withdrew from the race. I heard there was a big crash which involved around 10 riders not too long after I withdrew. Someone had attempted to pedal through the fastest bend of the course clipping his pedal and consequently hitting the deck and sending riders down the bank. It's not surprising then to hear someone say that some people are scared to race at Palace!
Looking back on the race I know more seriously hard training is required by the looks of it, although given that I had a hard ride a couple of days ago, it being my first time on the course and coming off the back of a chest infection I'm not too disheartened by my performance.. (Excuses, excuses... I know!) I'm looking forward to racing next week same time, same place.
