Starting off the pace was moderate but plenty of small gaps between riders had to be closed down quickly after coming out of corners to avoid being dropped back into a second group. I soon discovered my speedometer was playing up so I didn't specifically know how far into the 40 minutes + 5 lap race I was. Several attacks were made, however they were brought back with a lined out peloton.
Team-mate James Ebdon appeared to make a split with two other riders off the front whilst I was moving up the group, I steadily eased off in hope of allowing this break to go clear, despite this things came back together.
Sam Baker unfortunately suffered a puncture and after having a wheel change went on to put in a good attack that put some 100m on the peloton which took a few laps to bring back. A little while after this a lone rider went off the front and had a good distance on the peloton. Attacking into the headwind I aimed to join him, not being too sure how far into the race we were. With team-mate Ebdon working to slow the peloton up to let the gap open I was soon alone chasing another rider off the front. Gradually over a few laps I closed this gap. I was pushing the limits going through corners occasionally scraping the pedal on the floor in desperate want to extend my distance on the main field. On the last lap I caught the lone rider before the final sharp corner and went straight past. With some considerable distance to spare I crossed the finish line celebrating, pretty pleased with my result.
James Ebdon won the bunch sprint behind to take 3rd place whilst the rest of the team finished safely in the bunch,
